Dr. Harris, what can I do about dry mouth?

This is great question! There are many things that can cause dry mouth including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, radiation treatment for head and neck cancers, salivary gland disease, and stress.

There are some things that you can do to relieve dry mouth. Chewing sugar-free gum or candy, keeping the air moist with a humidifier at your bedside, using over-the-counter saliva tablets, sipping water often, and avoiding caffiene and alcohol.

Regular dental checkups are very important, too, if you have dry mouth. Having healthy teeth and gums will reduce decay and gum disease. Please let us know when you come in for a check up if any of your medications have changed or if there is anything that we can do to help with dry mouth!
