If you are not familiar with a VELscope, I’ll tell you a little about what is does to aid in the detection of oral cancer. The VELscope exam takes less than 3 minutes, and causes no discomfort to the patient. The VELscope uses a blue-spectrum light that causes the tissues of the mouth to fluoresce, thus allowing dentists to see any abnormal patterns. This assists in early detection of abnormalities that could not be seen with the naked eye.
The VELscope is the first adjunctive device cleared by the FDA and Health Canada to help clinicians detect cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions.
